The opening paragraph should immediately convey a page's purpose. After reading this paragraph, a user should already know whether or not the information they are looking for is on this page.

Believe it or not, this practice alone can dictate the success of the new website. A recent survey of prospective students and parents showed that users already think information is easy to find on our page. To make it even more efficient, it is important to practice good webwriting. If someone reads the opening paragraph and doesn't think the information they want is here, they typically won't read as far as this sentence before giving up on this page and looking somewhere else.

...are also important and should not be overused. If a user believes the information they want is here but hasn't found it right away, he is likely to start skimming down the page, stopping briefly at each new section to see if this is a better lead.
